Making Your Excel Sheet Show the File Name

Sometimes it is great to be able to put the file name on a printed excel page.  Unfortunately the ways to go about it can be labor intensive.  Here is the best way for individual sheets:

  • Go to Excel's View menu
  • Choose Header and Footer
  • Click the Custom Header button
  • Place your cursor where you want the file name to appear (left, center or right)
  • Click the icon showing the dog-eared page with the Excel logo on it
  • The code &[File] should appear
  • Click OK
  • The file name will appear in the header when you print the file.
You also can put the information in the footer at the bottom of the page if you like.

Note:  You can do the same thing in Microsoft Word
  • View menu
  • Choose Header and Footer
  • Place the cursor in the space for either the header or the footer
  • Click the menu labeled Insert Auto Text and choose Filename
  • Click close.
If you change the name of a file, the header or footer will also change.

How to Print the file name Excel Spreadsheet

Steps:  By default, new workbooks do not have any headers or footers.  You need to create the header/footer 'manually' for each sheet in the workbook
  • View: header and footer
  • Custom header (or footer)
  • Click on the open button
    • You will see &[Path]&[File]
  • Remove the &[Path], just leave the &[File]
